A lawyer, an attorney counsel, but not only.
Also a bridge between cultures, legal systems, disciplines...
and people.
You live abroad and have interests, assets, a project or a business in France — whether you are an investor, property owner, heir, entrepreneur or creative professional.
And you find yourself faced with a legal, administrative, and cultural system that doesn't always work the way you're used to.
The procedures can sometimes be complex, there are many people to deal with, and it can be difficult to get answers.
Above all, you need someone who understands your situation as a whole and who can guide you in France.
WHO AM I?
My name is Sara Byström, and I am a barrister in Paris.
I am originally from Sweden, and I have been living and working in France for over 30 years. I work in French, Swedish, and English.
My career path has taken me across cultures, disciplines, and professional worlds. It is this combination that shapes the way I work today
For my international clients, I am their point of contact in France — helping them understand their options, navigate the French system, make informed decisions and move forward with confidence.
BETWEEN FRANCE AND SWEDEN
My French-Swedish background allows me to understand the differences in culture, communication, and work styles that can complicate an international project.
I am a French lawyer, attorney admitted to the Paris Bar, with a Swedish background and extensive experience working with international clients. I understand the cultural differences, expectations and ways of working that can shape a cross-border project — and I help bridge those worlds.
This international perspective is something I bring to every project I handle in France.

My approach?
Thorough legal guidance, thoughtfully tailored to your situation.
I explain. I translate. I represent.
I adapt to your language, your culture, and your needs.
And I take the time to listen, so I can find the right solution at the right time.
MY CLIENTS OFTEN TELL ME:
- "You're our right-hand person."
- "You've thought of everything."
- "You were able to put into words what I couldn't express."
THE PARTNER NETWORK
Do you need additional expertise?
When necessary, I coordinate with my network of trusted partners: notaries, specialized attorneys, tax specialists, certified public accountants, judicial auditors, and other experts, both in France and abroad.
MY STORY? IT’S ABOUT MORE THAN MY QUALIFICATIONS.
- I first studied literature, communication, and visual documentation before turning to business law, intellectual property—particularly copyright—and then cultural heritage law.
- After gaining experience at a stock photo agency, I established the first legal department in France for the Sygma photo agency, which later became Corbis Sygma. There, I experienced firsthand the digital revolution, the evolution of image-related law, and international legal issues.
- I have also taught internationally, in English, at art, business, and photography schools, and represented France for ten years on an international scientific commission dedicated to cultural heritage.
"NOTARIES' BEST FRIEND"
My clients sometimes say that I'm the "notaires' best friend."
I like this expression: it really sums up the way I work with them, in a spirit of mutual support.
MY SPECIALTY? ADAPTABILITY
My legal studies taught me how the law works — its principles, rules and structures.
Working with international companies taught me how to put the law into practice — collaborating across cultures, working as part of a team and managing complex projects.
As for my powers of observation, my sensitivity, and my cultural perspective, they stem from my personal history.
A STORY OF FAMILY AND CREATIVITY
I come from a family where the arts play a major role.
My father, mother, grandfather, and grandmother were all professional painters. So I grew up in artists’ studios, surrounded by colors, brushes, paintings, and other works of art, immersed in creativity from morning to night.
Other forms of artistic expression—especially music, poetry, and singing—were also always present. My father was a “multidisciplinary” artist with a musician’s ear; my uncles and cousins are professional classical musicians; and my cousin is a renowned soprano on the international stage.
Growing up in this rich creative environment taught me from an early age to notice detail, value excellence and listen with care.

As a child, I played the violin, painted, and sewed. Later I discovered Japanese calligraphy with my teacher, artist Hiroko Kimura—Kimura-san.
This refined art of ink drawing demands patience, precision, and discipline.
Qualities that continue to serve me well in my work as a lawyer.
All these artistic traditions and practices shape the way I see the world and understand people, and influence the way I work.
My creative works has further developed my cultural sensitivity and my ability to approach each client and project on its own terms.

AND THEN THERE'S CRAFT BEER*
Yes, you read that right. Craft beer is also part of my family history: my ancestor Johan Alfred Sandwall opened a brewery in Sweden in 1862.
Today, I’m involved with the nonprofit organization Les Buveuses de Bière, and I also lead “Craft & Craft” workshops, where creativity, craftsmanship, and camaraderie come together.
Yet another way of bringing together the different threads of my heritage.
